As the beloved Indian sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) celebrates its milestone 18th anniversary, actress Munmun Dutta, widely known for her iconic role as 'Babita Ji', has taken a moment to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of women to the show's massive success. During a recent press conference commemorating the anniversary, the actress spoke passionately about her female co-stars and shared her perspective as a self-proclaimed feminist.
Dutta emphasised that the women of TMKOC are pivotal to the show, bringing unique elements and depth to their respective characters. While she expressed immense pride in the show and its cast, she also pointed out a broader industry issue, noting that women frequently do not receive the recognition they truly deserve.
A 'Strong Feminist' Championing Her Colleagues
In a candid statement, Munmun Dutta described herself as a strong feminist who believes in the collective progress of women. "I am a person who supports girls and has old ideas. I am a strong feminist," she stated. "I believe that if we want to move forward, we will have to move forward together."
She firmly shut down any notions of rivalry among the female cast members, emphasising a culture of support over competition. "I never felt insecure from anyone here," she added, praising both the original cast members and recent additions for their roles in the sitcom's enduring popularity.
The Underestimation of Women in Television
While Dutta spoke highly of her current working environment, she did not shy away from discussing the general tendency to undervalue female actors. "Sometimes, women aren't given the importance they deserve," she remarked.
She clarified her stance, stating, "I'm not saying that's the case here, but it does happen in some places. We bring a lot to the show and our characters. Women are equally important in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah."
Celebrating 18 Years of Gokuldham Camaraderie
Praising the actresses who portray the women of the fictional Gokuldham Society, Dutta described her experience working with them as wonderful and understanding. She noted that they consistently bring something "new and special" to the screen.
The actress attributed the show's incredible nearly two-decade run—which began its journey in July 2008—to the immense professionalism and genuine camaraderie among the entire cast. "We all come in every day, give our best, and work with complete honesty and professionalism. There are no hidden agendas. We truly appreciate each other’s work," she concluded.
