Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Former U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that his administration was actively trying to reduce the conflict between India and Pakistan, claiming that the recent ceasefire agreement resulted from his trade diplomacy.

Sindoor Operatioan and Ceasefire Context

These comments follow Sindoor Operation, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Trump insinuated that his diplomacy was responsible for controlling cross border rivalry, without employing the country’s military resources.

“We settled that whole, and I think I settled it through trade,” he proudly boasted while reminiscing his two-nation tussle.

“Somebody Had to Be the Last One to Shoot” —Trump on the Conflict

Illustrating the scenario of the conflict, he noted that the “Shooting was getting worse and worse. …deeper and deeper into the countries.” Trump also claimed that he reached out to Prime Minister of India and the Pakistani leaders to pacify the agitated regions.

"And we conversed with them… I reached out to them both," Trump said, further explaining that while he takes credit for resolving the issue, potential repercussions may unfairly fall on him if the situation is revisited.  

Trump on Modi: “He’s a Great Guy”

During the inquiry, Trump referred to Narendra Modi as “my friend.” He was supported by Ramaphosa who responded, “Modi, mutual friend.” Therefore, Trump went on, “He’s a great guy … It’s something good.”  

India Firmly Rejects Third-Party Mediation

Regardless of Trump’s incessant claims, India has avoided any suggestion of external interference in dealing with Pakistan, for India of any third-party mediation. The Ministry of External Affairs, for instance, maintains that the ceasefire was a deal, not imposed but a result of negotiations through the DGMOs of India and Pakistan.  

India continues to insist that the Pakistan problem is to be solved unilaterally without any preconditions, following the country’s steadfast position on international relations.
