Suspense crime, Digital Desk : On Friday at 4 AM, an unprecedented storm hit Delhi-NCR with winds reaching 80 kmph and bringing approximately 77 mm of rain to the area.
Along with local residents, meteorologists were astounded as this was completely unanticipated during the scratch of spring.
This marks Delhi’s second highest rainfall in May within the last 120 years.
IMD cites this as ‘Unusual Weather Forces at Play’.
The IMD has claimed that the severity of the cyclone stemmed from a combination of factors that had, heretofore, not occurred simultaneously in Northern India.
The region was sucked dry by cyclonic circulations situated in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
The cyclonic circulations destabilizing the region also contributed to the severe surface heat in Western Rajasthan.
To add to the extreme, the system was strengthened with the upper level westerly winds surpassing 120 kms per hour at an altitude of 6 to 12 kms.
The full storm was ignited with the passing of western disturbance initiating the last stage.
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra claimed rain was expected after the storm but not to this degree due to the cyclone transitioning too quickly.
Forecasting Problems
Even while giving general rain forecasts, IMD noticed the storm’s actual magnitude only hours before it hit. On Friday, 2:30 AM forecast only a sprinkle of rain with chances of a thunderstorm. By 5:30 AM, Safdarjung station in Delhi had recorded 60 mm of rain which was already supplemented by another 17 mm by 8:30 Aam summing to 77 mm afterwards.
This was the second-most amount of rainfall in single day during May since records were first kept in 1901, while it was second-most amount of rainfall in Delhi since August 29 2024.
Effect along with dip in temperatures
The minimum temperatures plummeted as expected, with a sharp drop of 5 and 6 degrees celsius. Also, the maximum temperatures around the daytime will ease in the coming days too. Light to moderate rain is expected throughout the weekend, but won’t be as windy as it was on Friday according to IMD.
Public Warning
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stressed upon alerting people to take caution when the weather alert has been issued, especially the orange crimes. The alert signifies the possibility of inclement weather, infact can cause severe conditions hence must stay alert, which indeed is a danger.
