Stock Market Outlook: Veteran Fund Manager Prashant Jain Projects 40-50% Returns Over Next Three Years

Post

The prolonged period of consolidation and weakness in the Indian stock market may soon draw to a close, opening up lucrative investment avenues for long-term investors. According to seasoned fund manager and 3P Investment Managers founder Prashant Jain, the Indian stock market holds the potential to deliver robust returns of 40-50% over the next three years, with current market corrections representing largely short-term headwinds.

Bridging Strong Economic Growth and Market Performance

In his quarterly letter for September 2026, Jain highlighted a notable disconnect between India's macroeconomic strength and recent equity market trends:

Pacing Economic Expansion: While India's economy grew at an annual rate of approximately 7.5% between fiscal years 2025 and 2026, the Nifty index experienced a 12.4% correction between September 2024 and September 2026.

Foreign Outflows and Global Pressures: During this two-year consolidation phase, foreign institutional investors made net withdrawals totaling roughly $58 billion, driven by global tensions, US tariff discussions, oil price fluctuations, and capital rotation toward global artificial intelligence and semiconductor markets.

Valuation Corrections and Historical Recovery Signals

Despite near-term volatility—with foreign selling pressure expected to ease by mid-December—current price levels present attractive valuations compared to historical averages:

Historical Outperformance: An analysis of Nifty 50 Total Return Index data over the past 25 years by 3P Investment Managers examined periods where the market declined by 15% or more over a trailing two-year window. Historically, subsequent three-year returns exceeded 200% in 10% of those instances, ranged between 100% and 200% in 45% of cases, and fell between 50% and 100% in another 40% of cases, with zero instances of negative three-year returns.

Corporate Earnings Growth: Analysts emphasize that cheap valuations alone are not enough; sustained earnings growth remains essential. Projections from Kotak Institutional Equities estimate that Nifty corporate profits could grow by 17.4% in FY2027 and 14% in FY2028, supported by broad-based quarterly earnings recoveries.

Large-Cap Appeal: While opportunities exist across multiple market segments, veteran fund managers view large-cap stocks as particularly attractive given their stability and earnings visibility moving forward.
