New UIDAI SOP Released: Check Updated Rules and Required Documents for Name Changes
Is your name incorrectly registered on your [Aadhaar Redacted] card? Whether you are looking to correct a spelling mistake or update your surname following marriage, the required documentation process has officially been revised. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has implemented a updated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to streamline name changes, introducing distinct document categories based on the nature of the update.
UIDAI's New SOP Categories and Document Rules
Effective September 18, 2026, all documents, affidavits, and gazette notifications submitted for name modifications are subject to enhanced scrutiny. Understanding which category your application falls under is essential before visiting an enrollment center:
1. Minor Spelling Corrections: If your card has a minor spelling error, or if you are adding/removing a middle name, writing initials in full, or changing name order, valid proof of identity matching the regulations is required. Minor formatting adjustments, such as correcting upper and lower case letters or removing dots, do not require any documentation.
2. Surname Changes After Marriage or Divorce: For applicants updating their surname post-marriage or reverting to a maiden name after a divorce, an affidavit prescribed under Annexure D and a valid proof of identity must be provided. The affidavit must explicitly state that the change is due to marriage or divorce rather than adopting a new identity. Registered marriage certificates are also accepted.
3. Operator Data Entry Errors: If correct details were originally submitted during enrollment but printed incorrectly due to a data entry mistake, adults must submit an affidavit under Annexure B, accompanied by a Proof of Identity (PoI) or Proof of Relationship (PoR).
4. English and Regional Language Discrepancies: If a name is correctly spelled in English but contains errors in Hindi or another regional language, corrections can be processed using a prescribed affidavit and matching identity proof.
5. Complete Name Changes: If you wish to change your entire name rather than just correcting a spelling or surname, creating a significant change in identity, a formal gazette notification issued by the central or state government is mandatory, along with supporting identity proof.
