Indian Stock Market : Nifty Settles Near 23,900 Propelled by Metal, Oil & Gas, and Private Bank Gains

Post

Indian equity benchmarks staged a confident recovery on Friday, September 4, 2026, snapping recent jitters as buying momentum lifted the indices into positive territory. Supported by positive global cues, strong performance across key sectoral heavyweights, and cooling domestic volatility, the markets closed the session on an upbeat note, providing much-needed relief to investors tracking key macroeconomic indicators.

Market Closing Figures and Broad-Based Activity

At the closing bell, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 362.57 points or 0.48 percent to settle at 76,515.43, while the broader NSE Nifty rose 24.25 points or 0.10 percent to close at 23,897.70, hovering tightly near the psychological 23,900 mark. Market breadth reflected optimistic sentiment across the board on the BSE, where out of 4,618 traded shares, 2,484 advanced, 1,900 declined, and 234 remained unchanged. Small-cap indices continued to display remarkable resilience, climbing to a brand new record high despite a marginal 0.2 percent dip in the Nifty Midcap index.

Top Gainers, Losers, and Sectoral Performance

Leading the charge on the Nifty index were heavyweight performers including SBI Life Insurance, Tata Steel, HDFC Life, Reliance Industries, and Trent. On the flip side, some profit booking weighed on HCL Technologies, Coal India, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, and Bajaj Finserv.

Sectorally, the Nifty Metal index emerged as the standout performer of the day, surging over 1 percent, closely backed by robust buying in private banking and oil and gas counters. Conversely, select selling pressure was observed in auto, IT, PSU bank, pharma, and realty sectors, which slipped by approximately 0.5 percent each.

Key Catalysts Driving the Market Rally

Several domestic and international tailwinds fueled the day's positive trajectory:

Global Market Uplift: Domestic equities drew strength from strong Asian markets, where Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 2 percent, South Korea's KOSPI gained 1.3 percent, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 1.11 percent, and Shanghai's SSE Composite added 0.35 percent, building on overnight gains in US markets.

Fed Rate Cut Hopes: Sentiment was further bolstered after US Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled support for keeping interest rates unchanged at the upcoming policy meeting if incoming data confirms cooling inflation.

Cooling Volatility: The India VIX volatility index dropped over 4 percent to settle at 10.85, signaling reduced near-term uncertainty and stabilizing investor sentiment.

Currency Strengthening: The Indian rupee appreciated by 5 paise against the US dollar to close at 94.46, aided by steady foreign investment inflows and a rising risk appetite.
