From Importer to Exporter: How India is Becoming a Global Hub for Cost-Effective Missiles

India has officially transitioned from being seen primarily as one of the world's largest arms importers to an emerging global defence exporter. In the financial year 2025-26, India's defence exports surged to an all-time high of ₹38,424 crore ($4.1 billion). This represents a staggering 62.66% increase from the previous fiscal year and a nearly 50-fold jump from the ₹700 crore recorded in 2014.

This historic momentum is largely driven by a combination of policy reforms under the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, increased private sector participation, and the growing global appeal of India's indigenous missile systems. The Price Advantage: Why Indian Missiles are Winning Deals

While India exports equipment to over 80 countries, the standout success stories are its domestically developed missile and artillery systems. These platforms—specifically the BrahMos, Akash, and Pinaka—are finding eager buyers across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and even parts of Europe (such as Armenia).

The main driver of this demand is cost competitiveness and proven reliability. Industry reports indicate that Indian missile systems and rockets are generally priced 20% to 50% cheaper than equivalent platforms from Western or Russian manufacturers. BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile: Jointly developed with Russia, the BrahMos is highly sought after for its speed and anti-ship capabilities. Following a major $375 million deal with the Philippines, Indonesia has also become a customer, and Vietnam is reportedly finalising a $400 million agreement for naval crafts equipped with BrahMos missiles.

Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher: Often referred to by some analysts as a "baby BrahMos" in terms of its export appeal, the Pinaka is a highly precise, cost-effective artillery system. Armenia signed a ₹2,000 crore deal for the system in 2022, and reports suggest even France is evaluating the Pinaka for its own artillery modernisation program.

Akash Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM): The Akash system became India’s first indigenously developed SAM platform to secure an overseas buyer when Armenia signed a $720 million agreement. It provides a robust, mobile air defence shield at a highly competitive price point.

Policy Reforms Fueling the Boom

This export surge is not accidental. It is the result of focused government reforms aimed at easing the business environment for defence manufacturers. Key policy shifts include:

Liberalised Export Licensing: The process for obtaining export authorisations has been significantly streamlined, reducing bureaucratic delays.

Increased Budgetary Support: The defence budget for FY26 rose to ₹6.81 lakh crore, with roughly ₹1.8 lakh crore earmarked for capital outlay, strongly prioritising domestic procurement.

Private Sector Growth: Private manufacturers are playing an increasingly critical role. While Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) still account for the majority of exports (nearly 55%), private firms saw a 14% increase in their export contributions last year, deepening their integration into global supply chains.
