Bank Holiday Next Week: As we get closer to the first week of September 2026, bank customers should plan their trips to the bank branches around the upcoming holidays. The bank holidays from August 31 to September 6 include regional holidays as well as the weekly holiday.

Below is the list of bank closures next week, based on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar:

When are banks closed from August 31 to September 6, 2026?

While digital banking services such as internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, and ATMs will continue to remain available, physical bank branches of SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and other lenders will remain closed on the applicable dates and in the applicable cities.

September 4 (Friday): Banks in Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada will remain closed on account of Janmashtami (Vaishnava) (Shravan Vad-8)/Krishna Jayanthi.

The festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is observed on Shravan Vad, 8 under the Amanta lunar calendar, which is followed in western and southern India. In northern India, the same astronomical day falls in the month of Bhadrapada.

September 6 (Sunday): Banks across India will remain closed for the weekly Sunday holiday.

Banks to remain open on September 1, 2, 3 and 5

Except for the regional holiday on September 4 and the nationwide Sunday holiday on September 6, banks are expected to remain open on August 31 (Monday), September 1 (Tuesday), September 2 (Wednesday), September 3 (Thursday) and September 5 (Saturday) across most parts of the country.

However, bank customers should check with their respective branch before visiting, as bank holidays can vary by state and city.

Are banks open today on August 29, 2026?

Yes, banks are expected to remain open today, August 29, 2026, as it is the fifth Saturday of the month. Banks are generally closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, while the first, third and fifth Saturdays are working days, subject to state-specific holidays.

RBI Holiday Categories

Types of bank holidays as per the RBI are divided into three categories:

1) Bank Holidays as per Negotiable Instruments Act–This is related to cheque clearance and branch banking services.

2) RTGS Holidays–Days on which no transactions are made by way ofthe  Real Time Gross Settlement system through branches of the banks.

3) Bank Holiday of Account Closing–Generally falls on April 1 each year.

Do online banking services remain available?

Yes, despite physical branches being closed, digital and online banking services remain fully operational.

24/7 Availability: RTGS, NEFT, UPI and internet banking services operate continuously throughout the holidays. Customers can use the digital banking services to transfer funds, pay bills, and shop online at any time, including Sundays, the second and fourth Saturdays, and on official bank holidays.

Transaction Processing: Digital transactions are completed in less than 1 minute, or within 30 minutes in most situations. When a user makes a payment via mobile banking or internet banking, the transaction will be processed without delay during holidays.

Branch Limitations: Physical bank branches have limitations, whereas digital channels allow users to access all services without interruption. Bank branches will not process RTGS transactions initiated at the branch on holidays or on the second and fourth Saturdays , when the branch remains closed. The bank only processes only transactions submitted through its online digital platforms only during these specific times.
