China Turns Its Attention to Brazil for Soybeans Due to American Tariffs
China, which imports over 100 million tons of soybeans every year, has changed their supply region from the United States because of new tariffs. This is a result of American trade policies by President Trump, which include a 145% tariff on imports coming from China. Subsequently, China placed a 125% tariff on American soybeans. Because of this, Chinese purchases from the US decreased substantially in April while shipments from Brazil to ports like Zhoushan increased almost 50%.
Over 70% of soybean imports to China currently come from Brazil. With ideal conditions for growth coupled with a record harvest expected, the Brazilian soy sector might fetch an extra $7 billionaccording to EXAME.
American Farmers Continue to Lose Profit Because of Low Demand for Soy Soybean
Brazil is reaping the benefits of having increased demands, whereas American farmers are facing crippling losses. Prices have fallen from $17 per bushel in 2022 to approximately $10 now, resulting in dire difficulties for many U.S. producers. China used to be the customer for one third of U.S soy exports but that demand no longer exists.
