Traditional agricultural paradigms are rapidly transforming as state and central bodies introduce innovative cash crops designed to maximize income in non-coastal regions. While coconuts have long been associated exclusively with tropical seashores and sandy coastlines, the introduction of advanced, resilient varieties has unlocked massive commercial potential for inland farmers.

In a major push to diversify agricultural income, the Bihar government—alongside the Coconut Development Board under the Union Ministry of Agriculture—has launched an ambitious initiative to promote large-scale coconut cultivation along the fertile banks of the Ganga River in Buxar district.

Lucrative Economics: Low Investment and Massive Returns

Although commercial coconut production in Bihar has historically been negligible, the state boasts soaring market demand for coconuts and all their byproducts, spanning culinary uses to traditional utility. To bridge this gap and provide farmers with long-term financial security, the government has rolled out a heavily subsidized framework.

Under the promotional scheme, the standard price of a quality coconut sapling is fixed at ₹85. However, backed by a massive 75 percent government subsidy, local farmers can acquire saplings for just ₹21.25 each. Eligible participants can apply for allocations ranging from a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 712 saplings.

Agricultural planners note that approximately 178 plants can be accommodated per hectare. With a modest initial investment of just ₹15,000, farmers can establish a self-sustaining plantation capable of generating an estimated long-term annual income of ₹2.5 lakh. Furthermore, the Central Government's Coconut Development Board provides an additional financial incentive of up to ₹350 per plant, disbursed in two structured installments to support cultivation costs.

Growth Timeline and Superior Yield Projections

Modern hybrid coconut varieties are optimized for inland survival. When planted at optimal spacing intervals ranging from 4 to 8 meters—depending on the specific variety—the trees typically begin bearing fruit within 4 to 6 years of establishment.

With proper irrigation, crop management, and routine care, a single mature coconut tree can yield between 100 to 150 coconuts annually, ensuring steady, multi-decade cash flow for participating farming households.

Overwhelming Farmer Response Met with Administrative Delays

The initiative has triggered widespread enthusiasm and eagerness among local agricultural communities in Buxar. While the initial district target was capped at distributing 1,600 coconut trees, overwhelming demand resulted in applications pouring in for over 2,200 trees, significantly exceeding initial quotas.

However, enthusiasm among farmers is currently tempered by administrative and logistical hurdles. Agronomists note that the peak window for planting coconut saplings runs from July through August. Unfortunately, despite the monsoon season drawing to a close, the Horticulture Directorate has faced severe delays in procuring and dispatching plant shipments to Buxar district.

Because of this supply chain bottleneck, not a single sapling has been distributed to registered applicants to date. While the financial framework offers an unprecedented pathway to rural prosperity, timely administrative execution remains essential to ensuring local farmers can capitalize on the scheme before the ideal planting window closes.
