With the rapid expansion of railway infrastructure, the surging volume of passenger traffic, and the introduction of premium high-speed trains across Bihar, the state’s railway security apparatus is gearing up for a massive overhaul. In response to the growing operational footprint, the Railway Division of the Bihar Police Headquarters has prepared a comprehensive expansion proposal and forwarded it to the state Home Department for final approval. The ambitious plan aims to fortify passenger safety, enhance local surveillance, and deploy specialized security networks to match the state's modernizing transit corridors.
Establishing New Sub-Divisions and Circles in Rajgir and Sasaram
To decentralize security management and improve response times, the blueprint outlines the creation of two brand-new railway sub-divisions stationed at Rajgir and Sasaram. Additionally, four new railway circles will be established in strategic regions, including Rajgir, Thawe, Khagaria, and Purnia. These administrative additions are designed to tighten ground-level oversight by the Government Railway Police (GRP), ensuring that high-traffic transit hubs receive dedicated supervisory attention and rapid operational responses.
New Railway Police Stations at Rajendranagar Terminal, Hilsa, and Kursela
A cornerstone of the new security proposal is the establishment of dedicated railway police stations at three crucial locations: Hilsa, Kursela, and the high-profile Rajendranagar Terminal in Patna. While Rajendranagar Terminal serves as a major originating and halting point for premier long-distance and high-speed services—including the Tejas Rajdhani Express—it has notably lacked a dedicated on-site railway police station until now. Establishing a full-fledged station here will significantly streamline passenger grievance redressal, crowd management, and crime prevention at one of the state's busiest transit terminals.
Scaling Up Infrastructure to Manage 1,337 Daily Trains and New Freight Corridors
Currently, approximately 1,337 trains traverse Bihar's extensive rail network, managed through four existing railway police districts (Patna, Muzaffarpur, Katihar, and Jamalpur), 12 sub-divisions, 17 circles, and 68 police stations. Once the new proposal is officially cleared, the state's railway security framework will expand significantly, increasing sub-divisions from 12 to 14, circles from 17 to 21, and police stations from 68 to 71, accompanied by a sanctioned increase in police personnel.
Furthermore, this security scaling accounts for future infrastructure developments. With the rollout of modern Vande Bharat services, Tejas expresses, and the ongoing construction of the dedicated freight corridor along the busy Delhi-Howrah route passing through Bihar, the state is proactively building a robust security grid. The comprehensive plan includes deploying specialized police circles and posts along the dedicated freight tracks to safeguard commercial transit, ensuring foolproof safety for both passengers and freight infrastructure across the region.
