Katihar Makhana Goes Global: District Administration Expands Reach Through E-Commerce Giants

The renowned makhana produce of Katihar, which has long captured domestic markets, is officially expanding onto the international stage. Under a strategic initiative launched by the district administration and executed by the Agriculture Department, local farmers and producers are being registered to make regional makhana goods available on major e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. This transition from local markets to worldwide digital storefronts promises to transform the rural economy by giving small businesses direct access to national and international consumer bases.

Innovative Makhana Products Set For Digital And Retail Expansion

Rather than limiting sales to raw makhana, local entrepreneurs and farmer producer groups are diversifying into value-added culinary items. Artisans and producer networks are now manufacturing a wide variety of innovative products, including Makhana Thekua, Makhana Jalebi, Makhana Rasmalai, Makhana Kheer, and Makhana Peda. To maximize market penetration, the local administration is assisting producers with high-quality packaging and professional branding, while a collective of 12 farmers has formed the Jata Farmer Producer Company Limited in Sirsa to streamline large-scale production.

Independence Day Rollout: New Sales Centers And Railway Station Stalls

To celebrate local heritage and boost domestic visibility, the district administration has scheduled the launch of three dedicated makhana sales centers on Independence Day, August 15. These outlets will open at the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) complex, the Collectorate complex, and the Khadi Emporium.

Additionally, the District Agriculture Department has coordinated with railway authorities to establish a specialized stall at the Katihar Railway Station. This strategic railway kiosk will showcase local specialties like Makhana Thekua, Jalebi, and Rasmalai directly to traveling passengers, offering immediate exposure to tourists and visitors.

Growing Institutional Demand Across Government Offices and Schools

The local initiative has already begun yielding commercial success. Ahead of Independence Day, producer groups have secured bulk orders for traditional items like Makhana Jalebi and Makhana Thekua from local government offices and educational institutions. With institutional backing, physical retail stalls, and upcoming e-commerce integration, Katihar's makhana industry is poised for unprecedented economic growth.
