Public transit across Bihar is poised for a transformative zero-emission leap as the central government's flagship PM-eBus Sewa initiative deploys a massive fleet of 400 electric buses across six key urban centers. State capital Patna will anchor the green transition with an allocation of 150 e-buses, while Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Purnia, and Darbhanga will each receive 50 high-tech electric buses to revamp their local transport grids. The comprehensive rollout, managed by the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC), is engineered to replace aging, polluting diesel-powered vehicles, slash urban vehicular emissions, improve intra-city air quality, and provide daily office-goers, students, and shoppers with smooth, air-conditioned, and pocket-friendly commutes.
Fleet Distribution Blueprint: 9-Meter and 12-Meter Electric Buses Across Urban Corridors
Providing operational details of the procurement plan, BSRTC Administrator Atul Verma confirmed that the 400-vehicle allotment comprises an equal split of 200 agile nine-meter buses tailored for congested downtown thoroughfares and 200 twelve-meter heavy-capacity buses built for high-demand transit corridors. Under this strategic allocation, Patna’s 150-bus fleet will feature 75 nine-meter and 75 twelve-meter units, significantly expanding the capital’s existing municipal network where 25 electric buses—including five dedicated pink e-buses for women commuters—are already running. In addition, an advance batch of 25 newly delivered e-buses has arrived in Patna and will begin commercial operations shortly, while regional hubs Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Purnia, and Darbhanga will each deploy 25 nine-meter and 25 twelve-meter buses to expand reliable intra-district connectivity.
EV Infrastructure Push: Muzaffarpur Charging Hub Nears Completion to Power Seamless Transit
To ensure seamless daily operational uptime, BSRTC is constructing dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs, secure overnight depots, and automated maintenance facilities prior to commercial launch. While modern fast-charging points are already operational at Patna’s central depot, civil construction on Muzaffarpur’s primary bus charging station has entered its concluding phase, with specialized high-voltage infrastructure progressing rapidly across Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gaya, and Purnia. By prioritizing robust charging infrastructure alongside high-frequency scheduling, transport authorities aim to reduce reliance on private two-wheelers and three-wheelers, positioning Bihar’s major municipal centers at the forefront of clean, reliable, and sustainable mass mobility.
