New Delhi, India – Fresh news for Indian motorists! The government has made changes to ease the financial burden on tolls for commuters by reducing them as much as 50% on certain sections of national highways that have bridges and tunnels. This comes from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and is expected to ease travel costs on some major infrastructure projects.
The drivers will benefit from the recently issued order that modifies the fee collection system for national highways that have been constructed and are maintained with public money. A considerable portion of such highways includes advanced structures such as bridges and tunnels. The “Harmonised Guidelines and Policy for collection of user fee” has now allowed these structures to reduce the charges that were previously applied to them which is a big win for motorists.
The reduction applies only to cases where bridges and tunnels are considered separately and individually as tollable units. In many cases, the construction and maintenance of such structures is more costly per kilometer when compared to the regular highway stretches, therefore, the tolls for their usage are set far higher proportionally. The goal of the new policy is to promote a fairer charging system for users traveling through these critical regions.

The decision is also an indication of the fact that the government is ready to make changes and revisions to its policies on tolls, with the aim of fairness and lowering the cost of transporting goods and services by roads in every part of the country. As the detailed guidelines for implementation and the list of the particular places for the reductions are still being worked on, the overall approach brings a glimmer of hope to those who commute often along these specific sections of the national highway network. The outcome is expected to spur the use of roads and deliver real savings to both private and commercial vehicle operators.
