Big news has come out about Dhoni amid the process of firming up the players’ rules and retention scheme for IPL 2025. It is believed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may keep Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the category of uncapped players while announcing the players’ rules before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Actually, between 2008 and 2021, there was a rule in IPL that a cricketer who had retired from international cricket 5 years ago could be put in the IPL auction along with an uncapped player. This issue was also raised in the meeting between IPL team owners and IPL administration on the 31st of last month. In this meeting, it was suggested to bring back the old rule of retention, which was opposed by many franchise owners. But the news that has come now can give relief to the CSK management. Times of India has given this information.
CSK CEO gave a big update
If BCCI applies the old rule, retaining Dhoni will be a cheap deal for CSK. As per the previous retention rules, an uncapped player could be retained for Rs 4 crore. CSK spent Rs 12 crore to retain Dhoni in the mega auction held ahead of IPL 2022. When asked if Dhoni will be counted as an uncapped player in the 2025 IPL auction, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told TOI that he has no information about it. He has not made any request for this. BCCI has told him that the ‘uncapped player rule’ can be kept.
It is not yet clear whether Dhoni will play the next season i.e. IPL 2025 or not. However, a few days ago, Dhoni made a big statement about playing in the next season of IPL in a promotional program. He had said that there is still a lot of time for IPL 2025 and he will have to see what decision BCCI takes regarding retaining the players.
