Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) executed a planned multi-pronged attack on the Mongochar region of Kalat, Balochistan on Thursday. The group set fire to government buildings, judicial complexes and multi-branch banks while exacerbating traffic jams on the Quetta-Karachi main highway.

The Fateh Division of BLA claimed the attack as their own and defended it within the context of their war for independence over Balochistan.

BLA Claims Attacks on Pakistani Military Convoys

Two days prior to Thursday’s attack, the BLA announced its assumption of responsibility for two retrospective assaults, asserting the death of 14 soldiers of the Pakistani Army, one each in Bolan and Kech. STOS, Shorkand Bolan Division claimed to have executed a remote-controlled IED operation on a military bus which allegedly had 12 soldiers in it, instantaneous detonation resulting in complete destruction of the vehicle.

Nationalistic movements in the greater Balochistan region are infamous for inciting violence and claiming land that is not theirs. However, went into standby mode following the Balochistan conflict of 1977. It is a complex mix of factors ranging from chronic stereotypes to oversimplistic international relations which has prompted the BLA to resort to extremities in fulfilling its purpose.

The Origins Objectives of BLA and Its Composition

BLA came into existence some time in 2000 but does owe its framework to older Baloch ethnonationalist groups primarily the Independent Balochistan Movement of 73-77 period. This ethnonationalist group supports an independent state of Balochistan based on a multitude of reasons including historical ones like claims of occupation by leading power Pakistan, forcible annexation, and refusal to enable development at regional levels.Balochistan is the least developed region of Pakistan considering it is endowed with gas, coal, copper, and gold. Furthermore, It has high rates of poverty and low literacy levels. The demand for autonomy or independence has certainly increased due to such issues.

BLA’s Focus Targets and Government Response: The Pakistani government classifies the BLA as a terrorist outfit. Observers point out that the BLA performs hit and run operations on military outposts and state facilities alongside almost exclusively targeting Chinese investments, particularly CPEC.

ISLAMABAD: Accuses BLA of receiving foreign intelligence aid, claims unsubstantiated yet get a lot of traction.

Impact on Civilians and Media Restrictions: All parties to the conflict are profoundly and justly vilified. It is often said that BLA has been involved in attacks which indiscriminately target civilians, but it is equally fair to say that Pakistan’s security forces do get accused of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances.

Nevertheless, the humanitarian tragedy and the volatility of the region is profound, almost none put any emphasis on the issue. If they try to report from the region, the journalists who are not anchored to their desks, and most report are said to face severe restrictions and danger.

Developments: The Hostage Crisis in March

The BLA captured the Jaffar Express train in the Bolan region and took more than 400 passengers as captives in March 2025. As Pakistani security forces initiated a military operation to resolve the standoff, there were casualties among both the hostages and BLA members.
