Police detained a student from Assam University over social media post related to the recent Pahalgam attack. They received a complaint regarding the offensive post and proceeded with the arrest.

As for police, the arrest took place on a Thursday. He is still in custody and will subsequently be brought to court.

ABVP Complaint

The Assam University wing of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) lodged the complaint. They alleged that the student, who is pursuing a degree in Computer Science, posted an abusive Facebook rant. The outburst was aimed at ABVP members and others who posted about the terror attack.

Post Deleted, Student Issues Apology

The particular post in question has also been scrubbed from the site.  

The student claimed in a follow-up post that she did not intend to cause any offense and expressed remorse for the misunderstanding.

AIUDF’s MLA Islam Charged with Sedition

The same day AIUDF’s MLA Aminul Islam was charged with sedition. His accusation was for justifying Pakistan’s involvement in the Pahalgam incident.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the government will not put up with any person or statement that is promoting Pakistan, whether on the internet or in person.

State Government Issues Strict Warning

Social media accounts which attempt to propagate violence or support terrorist activity will be dealt with severe legal consequences CM Sarma said.

Social media profiles that attempt to incite violence or advocate for terrorism will face harsh legal penalties CM Sarma stated.
