Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam was bearing witness to tourists sipping chai, eating Maggi, and partaking in adventure activities when all of a sudden, on the peaceful day of April 22, 2025, armed terrorists opened fire at religious groups. The scenic view turned horrific and left 26 people dead. This date marked one of the darkest days in Indian history. The day after, the bodies were brought home wrapped in the national flag.

The Attack’s Immediate Economic Effects

The attack caused a considerable surge in panic among travelers which led many to cancel their trips to Jammu and Kashmir. This, in turn, caused a drop in tourism and triggered an even fuller panopticon. As observed by toll operator Nadeem Ahmed, the number of cars at Pahalgam toll plaza decreased from 4,000 to barely a handful.

Chilling reports are also emerging from other tourist hotspots such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Sonmarg, with stakeholder tourism reports suggesting a full meltdown to the ongoing tourism season. Hotels in these locations are starting to report a significant decrease in bookings and visitors as well.

Change in Traveler Locations

Many travelers planning trips with the new fear still fresh in their minds will likely divert their plans to the alternative spot of Patnitop for their vacation. Those who did visit Kashmir reported a spine-chilling silence that ghastly heightened their fear.

Economic Impact on Jammu and Kashmir

As per Livemint, the region is a hub of activity for tourists. The hospitality economy contributes to around ₹2,700 crore a year and revenue from tourism reaches ₹10,000 crore, which is approximately 5% of the GSDP which is 2.65 lakh crore.

Over 3 million tourists arrived at Kashmir in the year 2024, boosting the economy of hotels, transport and employment. But the Pahalgam tragedy put the brakes on this development as cancellations reached nearly 60% post Pahalgam attack proving to be incredibly damaging to the local economy and livelihoods.
