Dwadashi Ends: May 24 at 19720

Important Note: it’s permissible to break fast only after sunrise but within the Dwadashi Tith period.

Rules for Apara Ekadashi Vrat

Avoid eating grains, meat, onion, garlic and other Tamasic food.

During the whole day read Vishnu puja and recite the name of Lord Vishnu.

If Parana is not followed the correct timing the fast does not hold spiritual value

Who Needs to Observe Which Day?

Hindu family men (Smartha): Follows the fast from the first Ekadashi day of the month.

Sannyasis, widows, moksha-seekers: May fast on the second day which is frequently celebrated as Vaishnava Ekadashi.

Worshippers of God Vishnu: Can fast on both days and draw greater rewards and blessings for themselves.

Spiritual Importance of Apara Ekadashi

The word Apara signifies ‘limitless’ which indicates how much spiritual merit one can achieve by observing this vrat with utmost devotion. Even serious sins such as,

Brahmahatya (slaying a Brahmin),

Dishonest activities or stealing,

Profane utterance within sacred occupations.

can be atoned by this fast according to scriptures.

Apara Ekadashi is deemed equivalent to:

Showering thrice in Pushkara Kshetra,

Having a dip in Kurukshetra during eclipse,

Surya Pratham snana in Prayag in Mukh month.
