Suspense Crime,Digital Desk: No Longer Accepted Proof of Indian Citizenship: You can no longer prove your citizenship through Aadhar card, PAN card or ration card. In the simplest form, not having these three documents means, you will not be able to prove whether you are an Indian citizen or not. A senior officer of Delhi Police has stated that only Voter ID card and passport will serve as valid proof of citizenship. As per the statement of a senior police officer of Delhi, this decision has been made following directions from the central government.
During the ongoing verification exercise since October last year, other nationals of foreign countries, particularly Bangladeshis and Rohingya, were found to legally reside in India using Aadhar, PAN, and ration cards claiming to be citizens of the country which was found to have rampant abuse.
As stated in a report from Hindustan Times, a police official remarked, “A number of illegal foreigners were found possessing Aadhaar cards, ration cards, PAN cards and even UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) cards. This made it difficult to properly verify the identity of Indian citizens. Hence, voter ID cards or Indian passports are now required.”
Delhi Police has directed DCPs of all districts to step up their attention on dubious individuals within their jurisdictions. According to the officer, the initiative to deport illegal immigrants will not stop until every last one is deported.
3500 Pakistani citizens in Delhi
This is accompanied by an increased focus of action by the Delhi Police towards Pakistani nationals residing in the capital. It is currently estimated that there are roughly 3500 Pakistani citizens residing in Delhi of which around 520 are Muslims. More than 400 of these have returned to Pakistan through the Attari border.
Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the central government has decided to revoke all visas granted to Pakistani citizens except medical, diplomatic or long term visa (LTV), which are exempted. Medical visa will also be rendered invalid post April 29.
