Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The United Nations human rights office has leveled one of its most severe accusations against Israel, declaring that the extensive restrictions on humanitarian aid and the widespread destruction of Gaza's food supply amount to the use of starvation as a weapon of war, which constitutes a war crime.
The blistering statement from the UN highlights a "catastrophic" humanitarian situation, directly linking it to what it describes as Israel's deliberate policies. Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, detailed how these actions have crippled the civilian population's ability to survive.
"The extent of Israel's continued restrictions on the entry of aid into Gaza, together with the manner in which it continues to conduct hostilities, may amount to the use of starvation as a method of war, which is a war crime," Laurence stated.
The UN office alleges this is not just a matter of logistical failure but a calculated strategy. The report cites the repeated closure of border crossings, severe limitations on essential supplies, and the systematic destruction of agricultural land, bakeries, and water infrastructure. These actions, the UN argues, have made it impossible for the people of Gaza to feed themselves.
The human cost of this policy has been devastating, with reports of widespread malnutrition and people, including children, dying from hunger and dehydration.
Under international law, the deliberate starvation of civilians as a method of warfare is explicitly prohibited. The UN's statement places immense pressure on Israel and calls for an immediate change in policy to allow the free and unimpeded flow of life-saving humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.
