Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Every year during the monsoon season, the highways of North India witness an incredible spectacle of faith and endurance: the Sawan Kanwar Yatra. Millions of devotees of Lord Shiva, known as Kanwariyas, embark on a challenging pilgrimage on foot to fetch holy water from the River Ganga.

For those planning to participate or witness this divine journey, here is a guide to the key dates and significance of the Kanwar Yatra in 2025.

Key Dates for Sawan 2025

The pilgrimage takes place during the auspicious Hindu month of Shravan (or Sawan).

  1. Shravan Month Starts: Monday, July 21, 2025
  2. Maha Shivaratri (Jal Abhishekam Date): Monday, August 4, 2025
  3. Shravan Month Ends: Tuesday, August 19, 2025

What is the Kanwar Yatra?

The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage where devotees, clad in saffron, carry a decorated pole called a "Kanwar" on their shoulders. Two pots filled with holy water (Ganga Jal) are suspended from this pole. Pilgrims, often traveling hundreds of kilometers barefoot, fetch this sacred water from holy sites like Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Sultanganj.

The journey culminates on the day of Maha Shivaratri within the Sawan month, when the Kanwariyas return to their hometowns and perform a 'Jal Abhishekam'—the ritual anointing of the Shiva Lingam at their local temples with the Ganga water they have carried.

The Significance of the Yatra

The pilgrimage is an act of immense devotion and gratitude to Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic ocean), Lord Shiva consumed a deadly poison to save the world. The poison turned his throat blue, earning him the name 'Neelkanth'. The offering of holy water is believed to soothe the burning effect of the poison and show reverence for his selfless act.

The journey, filled with chants of "Bol Bam," is a powerful display of faith, discipline, and community spirit, making it one of the most significant annual religious events in India.
