In a major change to its strategy, the US skipped on two votes at the United Nations relating to the Ukraine war and sided with Russia two times on Monday in what is a noticeable departure from its policy stance. This lead to Washington distancing itself from Kyiv and its European partners.

Detaching from the previously held stance, Washington found it appropriate to join Moscow in voting against the European sponsored resolution in the UN General Assembly that sought to condemn Russia's invasion as well as restate Ukraine's sovereignty. The resolution did get a substantial majority with 93 votes, however, 18 nations notably the US, Russia, Belarus, North Korea, and Sudan voted against while 65 other countries chose to abstain.

It was deepened once more in the US Front which lobbied in the UN Security Council for a separate resolution which sought a “swift end to the icount other countries which voted against it. Instead many other countries like France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, Slovenia.o the count attributed conflict”. The vote was won 10 to 0, while five other countries chose to do exactly what the other five nations had.

Together with France and Thailand, Washington chose to ignore paired amendments put forward by Europeans which sought to undercut the usefulness of the American sponsored eaches that Russia had commenced Ukraine in order to undo the bolster of sovereignty facing that iron curtain.

US ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea defended her country’s position when she said, “All member states are urged to assist us in returning the UN to its core purpose of international peace and security, and we have the responsibility to make sure the killing stops.”

Vassily Nebenzya, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, was pleased with Washington’s position, stating, “We appreciate the constructive changes in the United States’ position on the Ukrainian conflict.”

The unusual rapprochement between Washington and Russia has stirred quite some anxiety among European diplomats. Richard Gowan of International Crisis Group stated with warning that the Security Council might be turned into an instrument to circumvent Ukraine’s European allies by the US and Russia through resolutions.

The US change comes when there is increasing friction between President Trump and Zelensky. Trump has repeatedly questioned the US funding and arms, who called the Ukrainian leader a “dictator,” recently has asked if it is reasonable to provide Ukraine with further military aid.

This has caused alarm throughout Europe, who benefited off US security guarantees for several years. Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres repeated there is a need for a peace deal that ‘effectively guarantees Ukraine’s territorial integrity.’
