Chief minister MK Stalin announced the establishment of seven additional courts that specialize in handling cases involving sexual violence against women. An additional district level committee that ensures speedy resolution of such cases will be formed and led by a police officer.

In response to the motion of thanks regarding governor’s address, Stalin stated said that certain amendments would be made to the Tamil Nadu Prison Act to ensure that offenders of sexual violence remain in prison for the entirety of their sentance.

Sexual violence against women will not be tolerated across the state of Tamil Nadu hence, additional courts within the cities of Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchirappalli and Chennai as well as the surrounding areas will be built to handle such cases. Along with these courts, additional DCP will also be appointed within each district for a faster resolution process.

The CM stated that the police worked autonomously and were working under his government.

He stated, “If a crime has been committed, the perpetrator is arrested instantly. There is no political coverage of any accused. New laws are being put in place to set crime offenders at the stone age,” he said. alongside the sexual assault of the varsity student in December 2024, the Assembly passed rape Funds amending Bills which provided for harsher punishments than what was enacted in the the center law: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) law. Stalin, the Chief Minister piloted and shepherded the Bills to amend the BNS and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 in relation to Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act of 1998 and these were passed. The proposed in Bill further set, inter alia, RI 14 years as the minimum penalty for rape in the state and may extend to RI for life which means the rest of the life of a convict and has a fine.

BNS offers a starting punishment of a minimum of 10 years but this can be extended to a lifetime. If a police officer, a public officer, a member of the armed forces, or a teacher, or any such person in the position of power is found guilty of committing rape, then the minimum punishment is 20 years Rigorous Incarceration.
