India opener Sanju Samson has struggled to score runs in the ongoing five-match T20I series against England. Despite ending 2024 on a high with centuries against Bangladesh and South Africa, his 2025 campaign has been disappointing. In the current series, the Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter has managed just 31 runs in three matches.

Samson's future in the T20I format is also uncertain. With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill set to return soon, he risks losing his place in the playing XI. To secure his spot, he needs to regain form and showcase his abilities once again.

Kevin Pietersen Defends Samson, Questions Selectors

Amid criticism, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has come out in support of Samson. He praised the 30-year-old's talent, expressing surprise over his inconsistent selection in the national squad. Pietersen emphasized that T20 cricket changes quickly and expects Samson to bounce back soon.

“I think mentally he's sound. I really like Sanju Samson as a batter. I actually love him. I was pretty surprised that he hasn't had a more consistent role over the last few years. Yes, he's got a game here at the top of the order, but listen, these things happen. Things happen so quickly in the shortest format of the game," Pietersen said in an interview with India Today.

"A Fabulous Player, No Reason to Critique His Game" – Pietersen

Pietersen further added that Samson’s ability to play the short ball is strong, and he should not be judged harshly based on a short period of struggle.

“If he keeps struggling over the next six weeks or a couple of months, then I would probably start questioning his technique. But I think he’s a fabulous player. He plays the short ball extremely well, and I believe he's a rock-solid batter. So, from that standpoint, there's no way I’m going to critique his game," he added.

With crucial months ahead, Sanju Samson’s performances will be closely monitored, especially with competition for places in India’s T20I squad getting tougher.
