Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently completed his three-day visit to France. On the final leg of his tour, he visited the French city of Marseille on February 11, 2025. During his visit, PM Modi recalled a significant historical event related to Indian freedom fighter Veer Savarkar that took place in Marseille.

PM Modi Pays Tribute to Veer Savarkar

Speaking about Marseille's importance in India's independence struggle, PM Modi highlighted Veer Savarkar's daring escape attempt from the city. He expressed gratitude to the people of Marseille and the French activists who opposed Savarkar’s extradition to British authorities. "Veer Savarkar continues to inspire generations even today," PM Modi remarked.

Veer Savarkar's Escape Attempt in Marseille

The connection between Marseille and Veer Savarkar dates back to 1910. At the time, British authorities were transporting Savarkar from London to India as a political prisoner. On July 8, 1910, when his ship SS Moria reached the port of Marseille, Savarkar saw an opportunity to escape. He attempted to flee by squeezing through a porthole and jumping into the sea, hoping to seek asylum in France. However, before he could reach safety, French authorities captured him and handed him over to the British.

French-British Diplomatic Dispute

Savarkar’s arrest in Marseille led to diplomatic tensions between France and Britain. The French government accused Britain of violating international law, arguing that proper legal procedures were not followed in Savarkar’s extradition. In 1911, the Permanent Court of Arbitration acknowledged irregularities in his arrest. However, Britain was not required to return Savarkar to France. Despite the ruling, France maintained that surrendering Savarkar to British authorities was unlawful.
