Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday expressed condolences over the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station and demanded an independent, judicially-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident.
Taking to social media platform X, Owaisi also called for an inquiry into the “systemic failures” of Indian Railways, holding the government accountable for the tragedy.
"An Avoidable Tragedy"
The stampede, which occurred late Saturday night, claimed 18 lives and left over a dozen injured. It unfolded on platforms 14 and 15, where thousands of passengers had gathered to board trains bound for Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh Mela is currently taking place.
Offering his condolences, Owaisi wrote, “My deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives. This was an avoidable tragedy.”
He accused the BJP-led government of attempting to cover up the incident, outlining his demands:
- A judicially-monitored independent SIT to investigate the stampede.
- A broader inquiry into Indian Railways' systemic failures that led to the disaster.
Criticism of Railway Management
Owaisi further criticized the Narendra Modi-led government, stating that Indian Railways is a lifeline for millions of people and deserves better governance than what he called "mismanagement" by the current administration.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on Owaisi’s demands, but the incident has raised serious concerns about railway crowd management, particularly during high-traffic religious events like the Maha Kumbh Mela.
