MRSAM: Now the enemy is not well

Two medium-range air-to-air missiles ‘MRSAM’ (Medium Range Surface to Air Missile) were successfully test-fired from the surface by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) recently. These military-ready missiles were fired from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Orissa and both the missiles completely destroyed the targets en route. ‘ITR’ is the only Indian Defense Laboratory of DRDO, which provides safe facilities for the launch of rockets, missiles and aerial weapon systems.

During the test conducted from ITR, the first MRSAM missile hit the long range target at medium altitude while the second missile hit the short range target at low altitude and destroyed it. During these trials of MRSAM, about 7,000 people from three villages situated near ITR were temporarily shifted to safer places by Balasore district administration as a precautionary measure.

According to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, both the successful trials of MRSAM show the capability of the weapon system to hit targets at critical ranges. According to DRDO, this flight test was part of the live firing trials against high speed aerial targets and the increased range missile destroyed the target with complete accuracy while striking the target from a long distance. The Army version of the MRSAM was first test fired in December last year.

Just four days before the successful test of MRSAM, the surface-to-surface BrahMos supersonic cruise missile manufactured by DRDO was successfully test-fired in Andaman and Nicobar. During that test, the BrahMos missile hit its target with precision. As far as the characteristics of the surface-to-air missile MRSAM variant are concerned, this missile has been developed by DRDO in association with DRDL Hyderabad and Israel’s company ‘Israel Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) and ranges from half a kilometer to 100 kilometers. The MRSAM military weapon system with a range of up to and including multifunction radar, mobile launcher system and other vehicles. India’s Barak missile from Israel is also MRSAM. Made by DRDO in collaboration with IAI, MRSAM is based on Israel’s dangerous missile ‘Barak-8’. India has talked about a deal worth about Rs 17,000 crore to buy five regiments (40 launchers and 200 missiles) of MRSAM missiles from Israel. INS Visakhapatnam can house 32 anti-air Barak missiles with a range of 100 km or Barak 8ER missiles with a range of 150 km. Apart from this, 16 anti-ship or land attack BrahMos missiles can also be installed. Defense experts believe that after being equipped with these deadly missiles, this warship will be able to wreak havoc on enemy ships and aircraft.

The MRSAM missile that has been successfully test fired recently by DRDO is an air and missile defense system, a land-based version of the Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile (LRSAM) for the Indian Navy. This missile has been specially designed for the use of the Indian Army. The MRSAM missile is capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, fighter jets, aircraft, drones, surveillance aircraft and Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft and once released, it can directly hit targets up to 16 km in the sky. After coming in its range, it becomes almost impossible for a vehicle, aircraft, drone or missile to escape its tremendous hit. The very high speed of this medium-range surface-to-air missile also makes it extremely lethal for the enemy. Its speed is 680 meters per second i.e. 2448 kilometers per hour. The most special thing about this missile is ‘Radio Frequency Seeker’ i.e. even if the enemy vehicle is using only radio to dodge, it will still kill it. This missile is fully capable of shooting down any enemy missile, helicopter, fighter aircraft, etc. within a radius of 70 km.

According to DRDO, MRSAM for Army Air Defense is an advanced all weather, 360 degree mobile land based theater air defense system, capable of providing air defense in critical areas against a variety of threats in a combat zone. This missile system has advanced radar, mobile launcher along with command and control interceptor. Weighing about 275 kg, 4.5 m long and 0.45 m in diameter, the biggest feature of MRSAM missile is that it can thwart any enemy air attack from long range from ground to sky and destroy its target in just one blow. can do It is a two-stage missile, which emits less smoke when launched and can be loaded with 60 kg warheads. To provide accurate enemy information, it includes Combat Management System, Radar System, Mobile Launcher System, Advanced Long Range Radar, Reloader Vehicle, Field Service Vehicle etc.

However, it is believed that in addition to the MRSAM missile regiment from Israel, jointly manufactured MRSAM by DRDO and Israel can be deployed by 2023. These missiles will play a very important role in making India an air defense shield.
