A canal in Argentina mysteriously turned a deep shade of red, leaving locals and internet users baffled. The eerie transformation, which made the water appear as if it were covered in blood, quickly went viral as videos of the phenomenon spread online.

Residents in a Buenos Aires suburb near the Sarandí Canal were shocked by the sudden change and woke up to a strong, unpleasant odor coming from the water.

"It looked like a river of blood—it's horrifying," one resident told reporters, describing the strikingly crimson water as it flowed into the Rio de la Plata estuary, a region bordering a protected ecological reserve.

Authorities Investigate the Cause

Officials from Argentina’s Ministry of the Environment have taken water samples to analyze the source of the unusual color. According to an initial assessment, the red hue may be due to an organic dye. However, the exact cause remains uncertain.

Some local media outlets have speculated that the discoloration might be the result of illegal dumping, possibly from a textile facility or chemical storage site. Given that the canal is a shared waterway between Argentina and Uruguay, concerns about environmental safety have also been raised.

Official Statement

In a statement, the Argentina Environment Ministry confirmed they were notified about the incident on the morning of Thursday, February 6.

"Our mobile analysis laboratory was deployed to the area, where we collected two liters of water for chemical testing and liquid chromatography," the ministry stated. "The substance responsible for the discoloration is believed to be an organic dye, but further analysis is ongoing."

As investigations continue, locals remain uneasy about the potential environmental risks and the mystery behind the canal’s eerie transformation.
