Maha Shivratri is going to be observed on February 26. This day is commemorative to love, penance and devotion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. As per the religious custom, the marriage of Lord Shiva to Goddess Parvati took place on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha in Falgun month. From that day forth, people have been celebrating the festival of Maha Shivratri with splendour and festivity. On this day, devotees perform fasting and worship Gauri and Bhole Shankar in a systematic manner. Fasting on Maha Shivratri fulfills peoples' desires, aspirations and goals. So for those of you who are planning to fast during Maha Shivratri, here are some dos and don’ts of what you can eat or should abstain from. Whom should we fast on Maha Shivratri? Fruits and nuts are acceptable. Vegetables grounded to a coarse flour such as sweet potato, cucumber or ghee and other snacks. Milk masoor dal cutlets garnished with black pepper and philadelphia cheese along with rice flour thandai kheer and coconut barfi.
What cannot be eaten on the day of Maha Shivratri?
Food and salt is prohibited in Shivratri fast.
As far as the day of Maha Shivratri goes, no pulses, oil, spices or fried items can be consumed.
Maha Shivratri fast forbids onion and garlic consumption.
Also avoid intoxicating substances on the day of Maha Shivratri.
When will the fast on Maha Shivratri be broken?
Maha Shivratri fast will be broken on the second day after sunrise. This year the fast will be broken on February 27. For Shivratri, fasting time is from 6:59 am to 8:54 am. Please remember that breaking time for the Maha Shivratri fast is before the Chaturdashi Tithi ends.
