New Delhi: Rekha Gupta, a former Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president and first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), is set to become Delhi’s fourth woman chief minister. Known for her longstanding association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and extensive work in women’s welfare, the 50-year-old BJP leader from Shalimar Bagh was elected Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly during the BJP legislature party meeting on Wednesday.

With this victory, the BJP has returned to power in Delhi after 26 years, marking the end of the 10-year rule of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Her political journey began in 1992 with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Delhi University. She rose through the ranks and went on to become:

DUSU Secretary (1995-96)

DUSU President (1996-97)

In 2002, she joined the BJP and has since held several key positions, including:

As the head of the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee in the municipal corporation, she led women’s empowerment initiatives and introduced Sumedha Yojana, which supported underprivileged female students in higher education.

Her commitment to social welfare and grassroots development played a pivotal role in her rise within the BJP.

Rekha Gupta’s Historic Role as Delhi’s CM

With her appointment, Rekha Gupta will become:
Delhi’s fourth woman chief minister after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
BJP’s fourth CM in Delhi, following Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj.
The only woman chief minister in any BJP-ruled state in the country.

She will officially take the oath of office at a grand swearing-in ceremony at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday afternoon, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries.

Victory in 2025 Delhi Elections

In the February 5 Assembly elections, Rekha Gupta secured a decisive win in the Shalimar Bagh constituency, defeating AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes. Notably, she had previously lost to Kumari in the 2015 and 2020 elections, making her victory even more significant.

Following her appointment, Gupta took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her gratitude to the BJP leadership and promised to work for the welfare, empowerment, and holistic development of Delhi’s residents.

As Delhi prepares for this new chapter, all eyes will be on how Rekha Gupta steers the capital’s governance under BJP’s leadership after nearly three decades.
