The 87-year-old Acharya Satyendra Das played a crucial role in the journey of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. He witnessed major events, from the Babri Masjid demolition to the grand consecration of Ram Lalla in the temple. Dedicated to his service, he spent the last 34 years worshipping Ram Lalla at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex.
For 28 years, he performed rituals and prayers for Ram Lalla, who was kept in a tent. After that, he continued his priestly duties in a temporary temple for nearly four years. Since the consecration of Ram Lalla, he remained the chief priest. However, due to his age and health issues, he was unable to visit the temple regularly but had unrestricted access to enter whenever he wished.
Acharya Satyendra Das's Spiritual Journey
Acharya Satyendra Das completed his Acharya degree from Sanskrit Vidyalaya in 1975. The following year, in 1976, he began his career as an assistant teacher at Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya in Ayodhya. His journey as a priest began in March 1992 when he was appointed by the then receiver of the temple. At that time, he earned a modest salary of ₹100 per month, which was gradually increased over time.
Lifetime Salary and Honorary Status
As the chief priest, Acharya Satyendra Das was granted a lifelong salary. Initially, he earned ₹100 per month, but after the consecration of Ram Lalla, his salary increased to ₹38,500 per month. Due to his deteriorating health, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirtha Kshetra Trust relieved him from active priestly duties. However, the trust confirmed that he could visit the temple, perform puja, and continue his spiritual connection with Ram Lalla without any restrictions.
Acharya Satyendra Das's contribution to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and his unwavering devotion to Ram Lalla will be remembered for generations.
