A strong shaking of 6.1 magnitude was measured in Nepal’s Kathmandu valley at the morning of Friday with the epicenter being in Sindhupalchowk district. These tremors were also felt across several regions in India such as West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar.
No initial reports have indicated any harm or damages due to the earthquake.
As reported by the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, that earthquake in question was, in fact, measured in 6.1. The German Research Center for Geosciences reported the numbers to be 5.6, with a depth of ten kilometers (6.21 miles). The numbers by India’s national center for seismology and the US Geological Survey even go as low as 5.5.
“Apart from minor infrastructure damages, there is no grave danger reported of severe casualties from the earthquake of the morning. Moreover, there has also been no new reports of death or severe injury.” Said Dinesh Kumar Acharya, DIG of Nepal Police, as he addressed the media.
Seismic zones IV and V make launch Nepal as one of the most vulnerable regions to tectonic shifts which makes the ground extremely prone for earthquakes.
A local resident in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Rambabu Chaudhary, shares, “I was asleep when I felt the bed shaking, the fan was shaking too. We were scared and immediately ran out of the house.”
