In a major development in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks investigation, the United States has officially extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India. The 64-year-old accused is now in custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further interrogation into his alleged role in the 2008 attacks that left 166 people dead.
First Visuals of the Extradition
The first images of Rana’s transfer surfaced on April 9, showing him in chains around his waist and ankles, being escorted by US Marshals.
The photos depict a solemn handover at what appears to be a military airbase, as Rana is prepared for his extradition flight to New Delhi.
Upon landing at Palam Airport, Rana—dressed in a brown and grey prison uniform with white hair and a beard—was received by NIA officials and MEA representatives.
Rana’s Legal Custody and Charges
On Friday morning, a local court granted the NIA 18-day custody of Rana for detailed questioning.
Charges against Rana include:
Conspiracy
Murder
Commission of terrorist acts
He is accused of aiding David Headley, a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative and childhood friend, in planning the 2008 attacks by facilitating his travel and setting up a business cover in Mumbai.
US Government’s Statement on Extradition
A statement from the US State Department reinforced America's support for India’s anti-terror efforts. Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said:
“On April 9th, the United States extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face justice for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks... These attacks resulted in the tragic loss of 166 lives, including six Americans, that shocked the entire world.”
She added:
“The United States has long supported India's efforts to ensure those responsible for these attacks are brought to justice... We are very proud of that dynamic.”
