For the families who have spent nearly four decades searching for closure, a recent court verdict has felt like another painful setback. A Delhi court has acquitted former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case connected to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a decision that has been met with sharp criticism and vows to continue the legal fight.
This specific case involved the brutal killing of two men, Sardar Swaroop Singh and Sardar Ajit Singh, in the Saraswati Vihar area of Delhi during the riots that followed the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Despite the long wait, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court found Sajjan Kumar not guilty of the charges against him.
The reaction from Sikh community leaders was swift and strong. Harwinder Singh Dhami, the President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), condemned the verdict, calling it a "grave injustice" that "rubs salt on the wounds of the victims."
He didn't just express disappointment; he pointed a finger at the system itself. Dhami alleged that the investigating agencies, like the CBI, and the prosecution failed to present a strong case in court. He suggested that this wasn't just incompetence, but part of a larger pattern where cases against powerful individuals involved in the 1984 riots are deliberately weakened, allowing them to walk free.
"It seems the government agencies have once again failed to deliver justice to the Sikhs," he stated, arguing that even with clear evidence, the prosecution's weak arguments led to this acquittal.
An Important Clarification
Now, it's crucial to understand a key detail here: this verdict does not mean Sajjan Kumar is a free man. He is currently serving a life sentence in Tihar Jail after being convicted in a different 1984 riots case—the one concerning the killing of five people in the Delhi Cantonment area.
This recent acquittal is for a separate incident, but for the victims and their advocates, it represents another closed door in their long and arduous quest for accountability.
The SGPC has made its intentions clear. They will not let this be the final word. Advocate Dhami has confirmed that the organization will challenge the Rouse Avenue Court's decision by filing an appeal in the High Court, ensuring that the fight for justice for Sardar Swaroop Singh and Sardar Ajit Singh continues.
