Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has mounted a strong defense of the mandatory hijab while delivering a sharp critique of Western cultural values regarding women speaking at a meeting in Tehran he termed the Western approach to women rights as a total failure and a lie arguing that it has only led to the suffering and objectification of women in those societies Khamenei stated that the West treats women as tools for pleasure and products rather than human beings with dignity contrasting this with the Islamic view which he claims grants women true respect and a central role in the family and society he emphasized that the hijab is a religious necessity and an unchangeable law in the Islamic Republic dismissing calls for its removal as part of a Western political agenda aimed at weakening the moral fabric of the nation
The leader went on to assert that the Western civilization has no moral standing to lecture others on women rights given the high rates of violence and exploitation within their own borders he urged Iranian women to remain vigilant against the cultural invasion promoted by Western media and to uphold Islamic traditions which he described as the true path to freedom and honor Khamenei also noted that homemaking is a primary role for women but it does not preclude them from participating in social and political spheres provided they adhere to religious guidelines regarding dress and conduct the speech comes as a firm reiteration of the state's hardline stance on dress codes despite international pressure and internal debates regarding personal freedoms
