Imagine the Tesla lineup without the car that started it all the iconic Model S. It sounds strange, right? For years, the Model S and the Falcon-winged Model X have been the flagships, the cars that proved electric vehicles could be luxurious, powerful, and incredibly cool. But according to new reports, their time might be coming to an end.
Industry chatter is getting louder, suggesting that Tesla is seriously considering discontinuing both the Model S and Model X in the near future. While this isn't an official announcement from the company just yet, the reasoning behind the move actually makes a lot of sense.
Think about it this way: Tesla's world looks very different now than it did a decade ago. The company's massive success is no longer built on the high-end Model S and X, but on the mass-market appeal of the Model 3 and Model Y. These two cars are the real workhorses, selling in huge numbers and driving the company's growth.
Compared to them, the Model S and X are now niche products. They are more expensive to build and sell in much smaller volumes.
At the same time, Tesla's focus is firmly on the future. The company is pouring a massive amount of energy and resources into two major projects: ramping up production of the futuristic Cybertruck and developing its highly anticipated, more affordable next-generation vehicle, often called the "Model 2" or the "$25,000 Tesla."
So, when you connect the dots, a clear picture emerges. Discontinuing the older, lower-volume models would allow Tesla to simplify its operations and free up valuable factory space, engineering talent, and, most importantly, money. This would let them go all-in on the projects that will define their next chapter: making EVs accessible to even more people and delivering on the promise of the Cybertruck.
For long-time fans, this might feel a bit sad. The legacy of the Tesla Model S is undeniable it revolutionized the auto industry. But from a business perspective, this could be a smart and strategic pivot. The cars that built the foundation might have to step aside to make room for the ones that will build the future.
