Regular practice of yoga can have many benefits for overall health and well-being. Here are three yogasanas (yoga postures) that men can include in their regular practice to promote physical and mental health:
- Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Tadasana is a foundational pose that helps improve posture, balance, and body awareness. To practice Tadasana, stand straight with your feet together or hip-width apart. Keep your spine straight, shoulders relaxed and arms by your side. Plant your feet on the floor, engage your leg muscles and lengthen your spine. Take deep breaths, relax the muscles in your face, and focus on creating a sense of stability and alignment in your body. Tadasana helps strengthen the legs, improves posture and promotes a sense of grounding.
- Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose): Virabhadrasana, or warrior pose, is a dynamic standing pose that helps build strength, stamina, and balance. Start by standing with your feet wide, turn your right leg out to the side, and bend your right knee, keeping your left leg straight. Keeping your gaze focused forward, raise your arms parallel to the floor. Sink into a lunge, making sure your right knee is directly over your ankle and your left leg is fully extended. Repeat on the other side. Virabhadrasana strengthens the legs, opens the hips and chest, and builds inner strength and flexibility.
- Savasana (Corpse Pose): Savasana is a relaxing pose that promotes deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Lie on your back, legs extended and arms at your sides. Close your eyes and allow your body to completely relax into the floor. Pay attention to your breath, let it be natural and spontaneous. Let go of any tension or stress in your body and surrender to the present moment. Savasana helps reduce stress, anxiety and fatigue while promoting deep rest and relaxation.
