Spain is in the grip of the worst floods of this century. Due to torrential rains, water is visible everywhere. This severe flood has destroyed many villages, in which at least 140 people have died. The death toll due to floods in Spain is expected to increase, as officials are busy removing bodies from vehicles and search operations are going on. An unknown number of people are still missing. The worst natural disaster of this century in Spain has left a trail of destruction.
“Unfortunately there are dead people in some vehicles,” Spain’s Transport Minister Oscar Puente said, referring to hundreds of cars and trucks stuck on muddy roads. The scene after the floods resembled the damage caused by a powerful storm or a tsunami. Emergency services in the eastern Valencia province confirmed 92 dead on Wednesday. Two other people were reported dead in the neighboring Castilla La Mancha region and one in southern Andalusia.
Torrential rain worsens the flood situation.
Torrential rains that began in eastern and southern Spain on Tuesday continued on Wednesday, worsening flooding. Spanish President Pedro Sanchez said several cities were affected by the floods. “The whole of Spain can feel the pain of those who are looking for their loved ones. Our priority is to help you. We are using all the necessary resources so that we can overcome this tragedy,” he said in a televised address.
Helicopters were used to evacuate people.
Police and rescue services used helicopters to pull people out of homes and cars. 1,100 army soldiers were deployed in addition to personnel from Spain’s emergency response teams in the flood-ravaged areas. Spain’s central government has set up a crisis committee to help in rescue efforts.
