The news of the appointment of a new ambassador to India by the Taliban government of Afghanistan has heated up the matter. Some media reports have claimed that the Afghan government has appointed the current counselor Qadir Shah as the in-charge of affairs in India. However, soon after, controversy arose when Farid Mamundzai, the ambassador-designate to India during the Ghani government, denied the news. Farid said that 14 of our 50 missions around the world are dominated by the Taliban. No democratic country has accepted Taliban ambassadors. Concerns are being raised about the nature of the regime in the 14 countries that have accepted Taliban diplomats. Thus, the office of the Afghan Ambassador to India is still run by Ambassador Farid Mamundji, who was appointed by the Ashraf Ghani government. The status of the embassy has remained unclear since the fall of Ghani’s government following a Taliban attack.
