Punjab Kings are out of title race after losing to Rajasthan Royals in their last league match of Indian Premier 2023. PBKS captain Shikhar Dhawan said after the loss against RR that his team was 15-20 runs short. Man-of-the-match Devdutt Padikal (51) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (50) struck a 46-run half-century from Shimron Hetmyer to keep Rajasthan Royals’ Indian Premier League playoff hopes alive.
Batting first, Punjab scored 187 runs for five wickets but Rajasthan achieved the target by losing six wickets with two balls to spare. Sam Karan shared a 44-ball 49 plus 64 for the fifth wicket with Jitesh Sharma (44) and an unbeaten 37 for the sixth wicket with Shah Rukh Khan (41 not out) for a 73-run partnership for Punjab. After the match, Dhawan said, “After a bad start, Jitesh, Shahrukh and Karan got us back in the match but we did not bowl well.” I think setting a target of 200 would have been better on this ground. He said, ‘I think we failed to perform well in all three departments of a match. This is a young team and there is no consistency in our performances.
Dhawan said that as a captain, he has learned a lot in the tournament. He said, ‘I have learned a lot as a captain. We make mistakes and we learn a lot from them. Let us tell you that Punjab Kings were successful in winning only 6 matches out of 14 matches played in IPL 2023. He finished 8th in the points table with 12 points.
