US Green Card: Why there is delay in getting Green Card to Indians, the reason is America

US Green Card:People from India, China, Mexico and the Philippines face long and arduous waits for green cards because each country’s allocation has a quota system that can only be changed by Congress, a senior US official said.

Green Card is officially known as Permanent Resident Card. A green card is a document issued to immigrants to the United States as proof that the green card holder is permitted to reside permanently in the country. About 140,000 employment-based green cards are issued each year under immigration law. However, only seven percent of these countries receive green cards each year.

Citizens of these countries, including India, have been waiting a long time, said Douglas Rand, senior advisor to the director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services. There is an annual limit of 2 green cards issued to family members of permanent residents in the US. Said that 26,000 for the whole world while the annual limit for employment-based green cards is 1,40,000.

Addressing Indian-Americans at an online event on visa and consular issues in this regard, Rand said there would be per-country quotas for family members and employment-based green cards. 7 percent annual quota has been fixed.

That’s why people in India, China, Mexico and the Philippines have to wait longer than people in other countries, Rand said in response to a question.

‘Only the US Congress can make a difference’
Unfortunately only the US Congress can change this annual limit. Rand said, “Our job is to make sure that green card To be used every year when available.”

Thousands of Indian professionals waiting for green card
Significantly, thousands of Indian professionals have been waiting for green cards for more than a decade and sometimes the wait for visas can go on for years.

About 7,000-8,000 employment-based green cards are issued to people in India every year. This includes dependents of the primary applicant’s family. About 2,000 H-1B visa applicants from India receive green cards every year.

The H-1B visa is a nonimmigrant visa that allows US companies to hire foreign workers in jobs that require theoretical or technical expertise. Technology companies rely on H-1B visas to hire thousands of workers every year from countries like India and China.
