Lucknow, May 29 (Hindustan Times). Samajwadi Party (SP) candidates have faced a crushing defeat in the by-elections for two Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council Member (MLC) seats. With this defeat, Akhilesh Yadav has to face yet another defeat and his plans to unite the opposition parties in the Lok Sabha elections have also been disrupted.

In fact, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav nominated Ramjatan Rajbhar and Lohia Vahini state president Ramkaran Nirmal as candidates for the MLC election despite not having the number (MLAs). When both the candidates were fielded in the MLC polls, political pundits had already predicted that the SP candidates would face defeat, but Akhilesh still played the bet. After this the candidates also sent letters to the leaders of the ruling party as well as the allies seeking support in the elections as part of the political strategy to win. Their ploy also did not work and both the candidates faced a crushing defeat after the counting of votes in the evening after Monday’s polls.

However, due to this defeat, Akhilesh Yadav made a bet that the candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party would not contest the election unopposed. The special thing is that many parties did not get votes in the MLC elections, except the Nishad Party, the SP’s BJP ally Apna Dal (S). In which Raja Bhaiya of Jansatta Dal Loktantrik, Omprakash Rajbhar of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party supported BJP. The strategy of uniting the opposition in the MLC elections before the Lok Sabha elections seems to be running dry. Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party MLAs did not vote in the elections here. However, the relief news for Akhilesh was that the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance stood firm with him in the MLC by-election after all the efforts.

There is a mood of celebration after the victory of BJP candidates in the MLC elections. Padmasen Singh Chaudhary and Manvendra Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have won the MLC elections by huge margins. Office bearers and workers are celebrating by writing sweets to each other at the party headquarters.

It may be noted that 396 out of 403 UP MLAs exercised their franchise in the MLC by-election. One BJP candidate got 279 votes and the other got 280 votes. While one SP candidate got 116 votes and another got 115 votes. The votes of three SP MLAs could not be cast. Two of these MLAs are in jail, while Manoj Paras did not reach Vidhan Bhavan to cast his vote in the MLC election due to ill health.
