Computer Basic Tips: When we use our computer or laptop, many times we need to switch it off. During this, we have two options: Shut Down and Sleep Mode. But do you know how these two differ from each other and which option is better for you? Let us understand it in simple language.

What does shutdown mean?

Shut Down means that you turn off your computer completely. In this, all the processes of the computer stop and the power supply is completely cut off. When you turn it on again, it boots from scratch, meaning all programs and files are loaded again.

Advantages:

  • Computer performance improves because all programs and processes are closed.
  • Electricity is saved because the power supply is completely switched off.
  • If you are not going to use the computer for a long time, then this option is better.

What is Sleep Mode?

Your computer does not shut down completely in Sleep Mode. It goes into an alow-power state where your open files and programs remain saved in RAM. The computer screen turns off, but it may restart quickly.

Advantages:

  • The computer quickly turns back on, and you find your files and programs right where you left off.
  •  A little power is saved because the computer is in a low-power state.
  • If you are not going to use the computer for a short time, then this option is better.

Which option is better?

Shut Down
• If you are not going to use the computer for a long time.
• If your computer is having some problems and needs a reset.
• If you want to save power.

Sleep Mode
• If you are taking a break for a short time and want to get back to work quickly.
• If you keep getting up from your work in between.
• If you want to save a little power but do not want to turn off the computer completely.
