Budapest (Hungary): Trump’s return to America has created panic among the leaders of the European Union. The European Union fears that Trump’s stance may be against Europe in many matters. In such a situation, after the call of France and Germany to unite, 50 European leaders held a meeting. After this, now 27 countries have announced to hold a summit soon. About 50 European leaders, including Ukrainian President Zelensky and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, will assess the impact on relations after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.

Making an already complex economic situation even more difficult, Europe’s economic powerhouse Germany is mired in a political crisis after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sacked his finance minister. The development raises fears of elections in a few months and another standoff between the far right and major political parties in Europe. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the two events together have made the situation even more serious. However, the impact of the US presidential election is yet to be felt.

What is the stance of the European Council?

“Our relationship with the United States is important and we are ready to deepen it,” European Council chief Charles Michel said. The 27-nation European Union (EU) will hold a separate summit shortly after the leaders of Britain, Turkey, and the Balkan countries leave in the evening. During his election campaign, Trump talked about everything from a trade war with Europe to rolling back North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) commitments and fundamental changes in support for Ukraine in its war with Russia – all issues that could have radical consequences for countries across Europe. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a summit host and Trump fan, said Thursday morning that he spoke with Trump on the phone overnight, and declared “We have big plans for the future!”

Georgia Melona also made a statement.

Italian Prime Minister Giordano Meloni praised the deep and historic strategic partnership that binds Rome and Washington, a partnership that came under increasing pressure during Trump’s first term, from 2017 to 2021. The previous Trump administration imposed tariffs on EU steel and aluminum in 2018 based on claims the foreign products threatened US national security. Europe and other allies retaliated with tariffs on goods including US-made motorcycles, bourbon whiskey, peanut butter, and jeans. The impact of the US election result could be felt in Europe for years to come, with wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as issues such as migration and climate change. Zelensky is among the leaders attending the summit on Thursday. He is expected to appeal for more aid to defend his country from Russian aggression. The timing is important because Trump has vowed to end the war “within 24 hours” of being elected.
