Tragedy Strikes as Unfinished Railway Bridge Collapses Near Mizoram’s Sairang Area, Leading to 17 Worker Fatalities

In a tragic incident on Wednesday, a yet-to-be-completed railway bridge near the Sairang region of Mizoram collapsed, resulting in the unfortunate demise of 17 laborers, as reported by the local authorities. Concerns have been raised about the possible entrapment of several other individuals at the accident site, given that around 35-40 laborers were present during the incident. The catastrophe unfolded approximately 21 kilometers away from Aizawl at around 10 AM. According to a police official, “Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the debris so far, and several others are still missing. Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing.”

Announcement of Relief Measures

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the deceased in a post and announced a relief amount of two lakh rupees for each bereaved family. He conveyed his sadness over the bridge incident in Mizoram, extending sympathy to those who have lost their loved ones. He offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured and assured the continuation of rescue operations. Affected individuals are receiving all possible assistance. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that a relief amount of two lakh rupees would be provided to the families of the deceased, while the injured will receive fifty thousand rupees each.

Tragedy in Sairang

Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the incident and conveyed gratitude to all those contributing to the ongoing rescue efforts. He posted that an under-construction railway overbridge near Sairang, close to Aizawl, collapsed today, claiming the lives of at least 17 laborers. Rescue operations are continuing. He shared his empathetic thoughts for the grief-stricken families and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. He also expressed gratitude to the numerous individuals stepping up to aid in the rescue operations.
