Srinagar: Thousands of fishes have been found dead in Srinagar’s world famous Dal Lake. Experts say this mass die-off is due to thermal stratification.
People living around Dal Lake were shocked to see thousands of dead fish floating on the surface of the reservoir. Locals said they have seen a large number of dead fish at various places in the reservoirs. He said that there was a bad smell coming from the spring in the lake.
Fisheries department officials said this was due to temperature changes at different depths in the lake due to thermal stratification.
Feroze Ahmad Bhat, dean of fisheries faculty at SKUAST-K, said that fish may die due to low oxygen content in the lake. Pollution and weed growth reduce the oxygen concentration in the lake. He said the same has happened in the past in Lake Nijin.
