The Israel-Hamas Conflict: Why America’s Involvement Matters Now

Israel-Hamas War News: Us aircraft carriers in the Middle East are being targeted in drone attacks by an Iran-backed group. Although the US has managed to thwart these attacks so far, there is growing concern that a major attack could drag the US further into the Israeli-Hamas war. Just like after the attack on Pearl Harbor in Japan, America announced to join World War II.

Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said on October 19 that the naval destroyer USS Carney, stationed in the Middle East, was targeted by drones and missiles in the northern Red Sea.

“We can’t say for sure what target these missiles and drones were targeting, but they were launched from Yemen into the Red Sea as well as northward, perhaps towards Israel,” Ryder said, adding that he was not sure if the US Navy ship was targeted in the strikes.

Ryder blamed pro-Iran Houthi rebels in Yemen for the missile and drone strikes. However, this was not an isolated incident.

In the
past week, there have been attacks on US troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East — Iraq and Syria. There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

The Ain al-Asad airbase was targeted by drones and missiles on the evening of October 19. Several explosions were reportedly heard inside the base. The airbase hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq.

A day earlier on Wednesday, the US military in Iraq was targeted in two separate drone strikes. In one of these attacks, a small number of soldiers suffered minor injuries. However, the US army managed to stop the drone. At the same time, there was a drone attack on the US army in Syria, in which the soldiers suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the US is continuously increasing its military presence in the Middle East countries. According to the Wall Street Journal report, the US is sending at least 12 air defense systems to many countries in the Middle East. The Pentagon says a squad of US F-16 fighter jets has arrived in the Middle East, without specifying where the region is.

Arab countries have strongly objected to Washington’s decision to send military advisers and ammunition to help Israel. They see it as U.S. interference in the Israeli-Hamas conflict.

Over the past few weeks, the United States has sent large amounts of its naval power to the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers, their auxiliary ships and about 2,000 marines.

In addition, the US is also sending military advisers, including a Marine Corps general expert in urban warfare, to help Israel’s war preparedness.

The US believes Iran-sponsored proxies are targeting US forces in the Middle East after sending US Navy destroyers to Israel and promising them more military support.

During the quarterly open debate on the Middle East in New York Security Council on Tuesday (October 24), US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also warned Iran.

“The United States does not seek conflict with Iran. We don’t want this war to escalate. But if Iran or its representatives attack American personnel anywhere, there should be no misunderstanding. We will defend our people – we will defend our security – swiftly and decisively.”
