Doctors at AIIMS Delhi have saved the life of a baby whose mother had fractured her neck and spine during delivery. Doctors say that a metal implant was not installed in such a small child, so a bone was removed from her mother’s pelvis and the child was operated and implanted.

This is the country’s first and the world’s second surgery to connect the bone of such a small child without metal implant. Earlier in the US, a small child had a bone fracture, which was corrected surgically without a metal implant. Prof. Dr. Deepak Gupta, Department of Neurosurgery, AIIMS and his team expressed happiness over performing this successful surgery and safely discharging the child.

Dr. Deepak Gupta told that during delivery in a hospital in Meerut, the girl’s spine and neck were injured. The child’s weight at birth was 4.5 kg. Looking at the condition of the child, he was put on ventilator. After this, in May 2022, the child was brought to the trauma center of AIIMS. Here it was found that her neck bone was broken and there was pressure below due to which the girl was having difficulty in breathing. It was later learned that the child had suffered a spinal cord injury. It had slipped.

Doctor. Deepak Gupta said that the child was only six months old when we planned the surgery. Metal implants cannot be used to join bones in such a small child. In such a situation, his mother underwent surgery and five centimeters of bone was removed from her throat. This bone taken from the mother was divided into two parts. One part was implanted in the neck and the other in the spinal cord.

The surgery of this girl, who was suffering from birth, lasted for about 15 hours. After this, the child was enrolled in AIIMS for about 11 months. The child was one year old in December. His first birthday was also celebrated in the hospital. After being on ventilator for about 10 months, the child was kept in neuro rehab for a month. This child has been discharged from the hospital on Wednesday itself. Many doctors including Dr. Deepak Gupta, Dr. GP Singh, Dr. Rakesh Lodha, Dr. Shefali Gulati, Dr. Ashok Jarial were involved in the treatment of this child.
