Stampede at soccer stadium in El Salvador kills 12

San Salvador, May 21 (Hindustan). At least 12 people were killed in a stampede at a football stadium in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador in Central America. A large number of people have been injured in the accident. Some people are in critical condition. Therefore, the number of casualties is expected to increase. However, police had earlier said that the dead included seven men and two women above the age of 18 years.

The incident happened during a match between local team Alianza and Santa Ana-based team Faas at the Cascatlan Stadium. After this the match was postponed. Describing it as tragic, President Nayib Bukele has announced a detailed investigation. He has said that whoever the culprits are, they will not be spared.

Police say a large number of fans tried to enter the stadium after the gates were closed. After this this accident happened. Officials believe that the number of spectators increased due to the sale of fake tickets in large numbers. People became unruly due to the closure of the gate.

Officials said 90 people were being treated. Luis Alonso Amaya of Salvador’s Department of Civil Protection said about 500 people had been treated. Many of these have been transferred elsewhere. The El Salvador Football Federation apologized for the accident and said that all national-level football matches scheduled for Sunday have been cancelled.
